F7 and microphone

I'm sorry I'm still on F7 (and not willing to risk an upgrade right now).

I'm trying to get my microphone to work. I've opened up krec and kmix. I've clicked every little clickable thing and am unable to record anything from the mic. I'm not sure how to even begin to trouble shoot this problem.

Searching this forum finds lots of folks with problems with their mic even in F10. Most of the time it appears the mic is muted. I've toggled the little green button for muting in kmix to no avail.

I've tested the mic on my WinVista box and it works fine, so I know it isn't the mic.

Can someone please help?
