F10 x86_64 install failures on Asus M51TA laptop [lessons learned / what next]

problem: fedora 10 x86_64 install fails on recent model laptop. this model may have hardware that is too new or pathological for fedora. but, the ubuntu forums show some signs that ubuntu may install.

symptoms: freeze (blank screen) during boot (pre-splash screen) or install (post splash screen). see below for tests / partial workarounds i attempted.

question: should i (1) wait for (build my own?) respin of updated fedora 10 (x86_64, or x86?); (2) try fedora 9 x86_64; (3) try another distro; (4) run a linux virtual machine under vista; (5) (i do not want to try recompiling the linux kernel (CONFIG_MTRR=off??), etc.)

Model: Asus M51TA-X2
Processor: AMD Turion X2 ZM-82
Memory: 4 GB (2x2GB) of ram (but see note below)
HDD: 250 GB
video: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 (card) + (integrated) ATI Radeon HD 3200.
eth0: RTL8168c/8111c
modem: Agere Systems HDA modem
wireless: Artheros AR928x
Original OS: Vista Home Premium SP1 (32 bit)

(a) there may be problems with the radeonhd driver.
http://www.x.org/wiki/radeonhd
but i don't know if that is what fedora is trying to install.

(aa) there may be a fatal issue of any display(?) support for 4GB ram. but all of my install testing was done with 2GB ram (1x2GB).
http://www.x.org/wiki/radeonhd#head-...1f4b3ddcb43ae2

(b) i attempted to address install blank screen / freeze issues as per
http://fedorasolved.org/Members/khay...nd-workarounds

(b1) default install (hit enter at 1st prompt) goes to blank screen before the splash screen.
(b2) full 'debug' text-based install fails at arbitrary times after splash screen.
these are the options i used:
linux noacpi acpi=off noapm nodma initcall_debug mtrr=off

(c) recent(?) kernel bugs that may cause the install problem are given here:
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11541
(maybe now fixed in latest 2.6.27.7-134.fc10.x86_64?; the kernel on the fedora 10 install medium is 2.6.27.5-117.fc10.x86_64).

(d) ubuntu 8.10 desktop vmware virtual machine (obtained from fedora online vendor) appears to work fine under original vista. i have not tried fedora version.

(e) an ubuntu (ubuntu-8.10-desktop-amd64.iso) 'live' dvd goes immediately to blank screen.
(e1) an 'install' of ubuntu (ubuntu-8.10-desktop-amd64.iso) with modified boot options appears to proceed to completion (ubuntu prompt at command line, run level 2).
the output of dmesg for this case is attached in case it is useful for debugging.
the ubuntu install boot options used were:
[ 0.000000] Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper only-ubiquity initrd=/casper/initrd.gz acpi=off initcall_debug -- xforcevesa
related ubuntu threads (could not find any similar fedora threads?!!) are at:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...install&page=3

thanks in advance for any advice.

I'm having the same symptoms with my installation of Fedora 10:

Model: Asus M50VM-B1
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 2.53GHz
Memory: 4 GB
HDD: 320 GB
video: NVIDIA® GeForce® 9600M GS, External 1GB VRAM DDR2
eth0: RTL8168c/8111c
modem: Agere Systems HDA modem
wireless: Artheros AR928x
Original OS: Vista Home Premium SP1 (32 bit)

The systems are fairly similar, so it makes sense that we're having similar problems. However, since I have an NVIDIA card and you have an ATI, it's less likely that it's a video driver problem.

I tried to install Fedora 10 (32 and 64 bit), but both failed in the same way yours did. I also tried openSUSE (64 bit) without acpi, but the screen froze there too. I was able to get Kubuntu 32 bit installed (tried 64 bit, but it threw errors), but the system is fairly unstable. It sometimes won't boot, won't awake from sleep, and plasma crashes when I shut down.

Since this thread has already started, I'll try reinstalling those operating systems and post what I find here.

I also have a ticket about my Kubuntu wireless problems.
