How to have sound w/headphones - not speakers

How do you adjust volume for your headphones and turn off volume to speakers? When I plug in my headphones, sound comes through both speakers and headphones at the same time.

Is there a way to set it so when plugging in headphones the speakers turn off?

I'm running Fedora 10 64bit

same problem here, im using fedora 9... ive been tweaking with the sound/volume settings, still it wont work..
