Unhappy Sending messages to other linux computers over LAN

Hi,
I have a laptop (running Fedora 10 KDE version) and a desktop (running Ubuntu 7.10) on my home network. Is there any way to send messages from one computer to another through LAN ?

I think Tomboy will synchronize notes over the network.

Thanks for the reply, but I was looking for a way to send messages that would pop up in a new window on the other computer. Is this possible with Tomboy ?

My first thought was running an IRC or Jabber server on the LAN. I haven't tried that myself but the guides are all over the Web. Do a "yum search" and you'll see there are a bunch of server software for IRC or Jabber in the Fedora repo.

After the server is up, tell all clients to connect to it with something like Pidgin, which can be configured to pop up the chat window whenever a new message is received.

You might want to look up linpopup. It allows you to send messages between computers on your lan. You will have to have samba installed and running - I think.

Your distros may allow you to download it from their respective repositories. Or you will have to do a search for it online.

Hope that helps.

LinPopUp seems to work OK provided the user launches it on login. I found a different solution and documented it it below:

See the 'Messaging' section. Hope this is helpful.
