Rhythmbox keeps asking for Windows Media Audio Decoder plugin

Hi everyone,
My music library contains some old .wma files and each time I try to run Rhythmbox, a window pops up saying that:

<Name of current song> requires an Additional plugin. The following plugin is required: Windows Media Audio Decoder. Do you want to search for this now ?

If I press the search button I get a response saying that the package was not found. Then I press the close button, only to see the same dialog popping up again. The funny thing is that all this is happening while the current songs is not in WMA format and it is actually playing

I am running fedora 11 and have configured both rpm-fusion and livna repositories.

Athanassios.

Package gstreamer-ffmpeg-0.10.7-2.fc11.1.x86_64 already installed and latest version.

I am also pasting the console output of rhythmbox in case somebody gets a better idea

Thank you Leigh for providing us with a working configuration.
In my case the missing package was gstreamer-0.10.23-2.fc11.i586. After installing it, Phythmbox now plays MP3's, does not complain about missing codecs but still refuses to play wma files.

To be honest my wma files are so few that I do not really care to listen to any of them. The most important part is that the annoying messages have disappeared and I can browse my music collection again.

Re: Rhythmbox keeps asking for Windows Media Audio Decoder plugin

hey everybody! a little bump here but anyway,

I also have the same problem.

whenever I try to run rhythmbox I get this terminal output:

Code:
Rhythmbox-Message: Missing plugin: gstreamer|0.10|rhythmbox-metadata|Windows Media Audio decoder|decoder-audio/x-wma, wmaversion=(int)4, bitrate=(int)1029704
** Message: PackageKit: xid = 109051965
** Message: PackageKit: Codec nice name: Windows Media Audio decoder
** Message: PackageKit: field is: wmaversion, type: gint
** Message: PackageKit: structure: gstreamer0.10(decoder-audio/x-wma)(wmaversion=4)()(64bit)
and a notification that says that rhythmbox needs an additional plugin (WMA decoder).

When I press 'search' I get a failure report stating that no such plugin could be found.

the difference here is that rpm -qa | grep gstreamer

gives all this output:
Code:
gstreamer-plugins-ugly-0.10.13-1.fc12.x86_64
gstreamer-java-javadoc-1.3-3.fc12.x86_64
gstreamermm-0.10.6-1.fc12.x86_64
gstreamer-plugins-bad-free-extras-0.10.18-1.fc12.x86_64
gstreamer-plugins-bad-nonfree-0.10.18-1.fc12.x86_64
gstreamer-ffmpeg-0.10.10-1.fc12.x86_64
gstreamer-plugins-bad-free-extras-0.10.18-1.fc12.i686
gstreamer-plugins-base-0.10.28-1.fc12.x86_64
gstreamer-plugins-good-0.10.21-1.fc12.x86_64
gstreamer-rtsp-vala-0.10.5-1.fc12.x86_64
gstreamer-python-0.10.16-1.fc12.x86_64
gstreamer-0.10.28-2.fc12.i686
gstreamer-plugins-espeak-0.3.3-2.fc12.x86_64
gstreamer-rtsp-python-0.10.5-1.fc12.x86_64
gstreamer-0.10.28-2.fc12.x86_64
PackageKit-gstreamer-plugin-0.5.7-2.fc12.x86_64
gstreamer-rtsp-0.10.5-1.fc12.x86_64
gstreamer-plugins-bad-0.10.17-4.fc12.x86_64
gstreamer-plugins-base-0.10.28-1.fc12.i686
gstreamer-tools-0.10.28-2.fc12.x86_64
gstreamer-java-1.3-3.fc12.x86_64
gstreamer-plugins-bad-free-0.10.18-1.fc12.x86_64
gstreamer-plugins-fc-0.1-3.fc12.x86_64
So apparently I do have the necessary packages...
Is it possible that I have to remove some?

Re: Rhythmbox keeps asking for Windows Media Audio Decoder plugin

I was having the annoying message issue as well. I started by removing all the gstreamer
packages and then reinstalled them. I made sure to install the -ffmpeg last.

In my case, I am running the Fedora 13 alpha soon to be the FC13 release.

Re: Rhythmbox keeps asking for Windows Media Audio Decoder plugin

I had problems with

gstreamer-plugins-bad-free-extras
gstreamer-plugins-bad-free

I don't think they are compatible you have to choose the normal ones or the free ones.
gstreamer-plugins-bad
gstreamer-plugins-bad-extras

Re: Rhythmbox keeps asking for Windows Media Audio Decoder plugin

The irritating thing is that it plays the file without a hitch, just continually requests the plug in search.

Re: Rhythmbox keeps asking for Windows Media Audio Decoder plugin

Since reinstalling the codecs, have you deleted the contents of ~/.local/share/rhythmbox ?
(particularly rhythmdb.xml and playlists.xml, although rhythmdb.xml is probably the main culprit)

I kept having the problem, so I
...reloaded all plugins,
...yum updated everything,
...even loaded both x64 and i686 versions of plugins just to be sure

NO DICE.

THEN just figured like with other stuff maybe it just needs to be reset...
...shutdown rhythmbox
...renamed the offending files (a-la-mv)
...ran rhythmbox, comes up clean and empty.
...turned "watch..." back on in preferences

and everything loaded into the library with zero notifications.

I have been able to replicate this solution on additional fedora 13 x64 workstations.

Hope this helps. I was inspired by this thread to keep digging, just wanted to pass it on.
