Is [Lock Screen] supposed to blank or cover screen?

I use the FC2-x86-64 with KDE desktop.

When PC is busy doing massive download or something, I try to lock the screen. Several times it don't respond at all, didn't lock.

I tried again much latter, it locked, and came out with an unlocking dialog box, asking for password. This is fine.

But behind the unlock dialogbox, all my desktop is still displayed.

I would expect a locked screen to be clear of user's desktop displays, not showing the contents. This should be immediate, and not waiting for screen saver to take place. Nor it should depend on screen saver at all.

When a user have a sensitive session of data on the desktop, and have to walk away, the screen lock should lock down entire console including keyboard & mouse & screen. Otherwise, sensitive data can still be compromized.

Is this a malfunction or is it my PC was too busy that it didn't clear my screen?

Any comments?

Didn't noticed it but indeed, on my FC2 box I have to put the screensaver on blank screen only.
So "lock screen" will immediately put my screen on a lock with a black screen.

I don't mind but it is strange that the "lock screen" depends on the screen saver settings!

Why do you find it strange? Clicking on "lock" simply activates the screen-saver in lock-down mode. Try man xscreensaver-command for more information.

I found it strange cause I thought that a security protection option (the lock screen option) would
be a stand alone program. Not a option of the screensaver.

The equivalent to Lock Screen in Windows is blank screen screensaver with the ask for password option.

It's only a black screen in front of your desktop.

I understand it to be a way of keeping things from casual snoops.

I found that it would work better when PC isn't too busy.

But still feelinging abnormal about my FC2. It is an Opteron and I was using it only for huge FTP download at that time. How busy could it get for just FTP over ADSL 512kbps? This job was enough to put the screen saver away not functioning.

When FTP was over it could lock the screen better, but stillno 100%
