Konsole in KDE

Hi

How can I set the console in both kde and gnome (mostly kde konsole) to the usual [username@localhost]<currentfolder> layout ?. It looks like this now:

Code:
bash-4.0$ cd /home/M/Documents
bash-4.0$
the real console after text based login has the normal layout "[root@Fedora ~]#" but consoles within x only show "bash-4.0$"

What have I messed up and how can I restore it ?

Thanks in Advance

Sounds like the x terminal emulators are, for some reason, failing to execute either ~/.bashrc or /etc/profile.

Check the permissions on those files to ensure that your user has execute perms for them. But that's probably not the problem.

It's possible that the emulators themselves (like konsole) may be set to not start a login shell.

Could you paste the contents of /etc/profile and ~/.bashrc?

Thanks for the reply

I made a clean installation on my PC recently and used the old /home partition again with its contents i think thats why it does not read the console profile. its all good when i login as another user or root (i.e. 'su' in konsole will bring up the correct prompt) but not if i use my main users old /home partition, anaconda asked if i want to use the old home again and everything else works fine.

/etc/profile and there is no ~/.bashrc here
Code:
# /etc/profile

# System wide environment and startup programs, for login setup
# Functions and aliases go in /etc/bashrc

pathmunge () {
    if ! echo $PATH | /bin/egrep -q "(^|:)$1($|:)" ; then
       if [ "$2" = "after" ] ; then
          PATH=$PATH:$1
       else
          PATH=$1:$PATH
       fi
    fi
}

# ksh workaround
if [ -z "$EUID" -a -x /usr/bin/id ]; then
    EUID=`id -u`
    UID=`id -ru`
fi

# Path manipulation
if [ "$EUID" = "0" ]; then
    pathmunge /sbin
    pathmunge /usr/sbin
    pathmunge /usr/local/sbin
else
    pathmunge /usr/local/sbin after
    pathmunge /usr/sbin after
    pathmunge /sbin after
fi

if [ -x /usr/bin/id ]; then
    USER="`id -un`"
    LOGNAME=$USER
    MAIL="/var/spool/mail/$USER"
fi

HOSTNAME=`/bin/hostname 2>/dev/null`
HISTSIZE=1000

export PATH USER LOGNAME MAIL HOSTNAME HISTSIZE

for i in /etc/profile.d/*.sh ; do
    if [ -r "$i" ]; then
        if [ "$PS1" ]; then
            . $i
        else
            . $i >/dev/null 2>&1
        fi
    fi
done

unset i
unset pathmunge

I fixed it now, copied .bash_profile .bashrc and .bash_logout from a new user account to mine and it works. seems like anaconda does not create these files if you choose to use an existing home partition.

thanks for the hint and best regards

Great. Was just about to tell you to copy those files from /etc/skel, but that'll work too.
