Can't send email using mail and sendmail

[root@compname etc]# /sbin/service sendmail status
sendmail (pid 1415) is running...
sm-client (pid 1424) is running...
[root@compname etc]#

All settings are default .

A few times tried to send email like following:

mail -s hereSubject user@mailServer.com
here data
^D (ei . [dot])

but sendmail does not sends it
What is not correct? how to elaborate this problem ?

OS : FEdora Core 12

Search out that SMTP 503 error.

The short of it:
The default sendmail configuration on Fedora is so that it is not set up as an open relay. So, it won't route mail for non-authenticated users.

You need to either change the sendmail configuration to allow open relays (not recommended) or authenticate before attempting to get the sendmail daemon to route your email.


(Note: even if you fix the daemon on your side, if you have a residential internet service plan and live in the U.S., U.K., or some parts of Western Europe, there's a chance that your ISP will drop any outgoing emails destined for their mail servers.)
