Don't know how to install Eclipse

I know this is really ignorant, but I have really no experience with Linux to speak of. I'm trying to install a JAVA development environment using Eclipse with the goal ultimately of developing Apps for Android. (I'm a long time microsoft developer and I want to branch out - not just to android but away from microsoft completely).

> I have downloaded and installed (I think) the JAVA JDK (it says it is installed when I try to run the rpm again).

> I have downloaded and extracted a version of Eclipse from the web. I see an executable file sitting there but when I click it, it does nothing, not even give me an error.

I simply don't even know what to do next or whether I missed something?? I'm lost.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks very much.

Re: Don't know how to install Eclipse

Try this in Terminal as root:

Code:
yum install eclipse
It'll surely install Eclipse alongwith all its dependencies.

Re: Don't know how to install Eclipse

Thanks for the rapid response.

I tried it as you said. As root, from within the directory where Eclipse was unpacked, and it came back listing a couple of other things I had already installed like Google Chrome, etc then said 'No Package Eclipse available.'

Again thanks for the response, but is there anything else I can try?

Case sensitive. The Eclipse package name is all lowercase (package names in the Fedora repositories are almost always all lowercase). Run the command exactly like Ishwon has written it.

Also, you don't need to run it "from within the directory where Eclipse was unpacked." yum is a package manager that will pull precompiled programs from the Fedora repositories. On most Linux distros with their own software repositories there's generally no need to go to software vendors' websites to download software directly.

Re: Don't know how to install Eclipse

I just ran the command, and yes 'eclipse' is available as 'eclipse-pde'. forkbomb is right. Try it in lowercase.

Since no-one else caught this, I'll comment for those that don't know...
If this is a " *.EXE " file that you are trying to install, THAT is the problem. This is a M$ file, NOT LINUX.

[M$ = microsoft]
