gnome-volume-control-applet microphone

Recently, some update made a microphone icon appear along with the speaker in the notification area.

I don't want it there. How do I get rid of it?

Next, where do I make the suggestion that the volume control does not belong in the notification area? What is it notifying me of? Nothing right? Then it needs to be a panel applet, not a notification area applet.
