gdm login screen is empty - unable to login

Hey Everyone,

1st time here. Been using and loving kubuntu until kde4, then on ubuntu/gnome until recently when it started feeling not as stable as I'd like. On my hunt for a new linux, I thought Fedora would be my next try as it's related to RHEL.

Anyhow, I installed the Fusion remix and I'm really liking Fedora!! The install was particularly easy, even when compared to ubuntu. I want to sort out the few problems I'm having so I can stay in Fedora-land and keep enjoying it here.

My big problem is the gdm login. I've done lots of looking around in here and the only hint to a solution was "install kdm". Fusion's google group has an open thread about this issue. I have looked through /var/log/gdm/:0* /var/log/messages /var/log/dmesg and /var/log/Xorg.0.log (in reverse order). There is only one thing that stands out at all:

PHP Code:
Jan  9 22:18:57 hostname gdm-simple-greeter[1684]: Gtk-WARNINGgtkwidget.c:5691widget not within a GtkWindow
Jan  9 22
:19:18 hostname gdm-simple-greeter[1796]: Gtk-WARNINGgtkwidget.c:5691widget not within a GtkWindow
Jan  9 22
:19:21 hostname gdm-simple-greeter[1796]: WARNINGFailed to send buffer
Other than those, there are no big WARNINGs or anything.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
Chris

PS - my other small issue is that my Win 7 and Ubuntu partitions disappeared in Grub, but I'm not in too much of a hurry since it forces me to use Fedora. I planned on using ubuntu liveCD to reinstall ubuntu's grub2 if some research here in Fedora-land didn't get me a fix.

That may be because Fedora clobbered the old GRUB when it was installed.

I've run into a similar problem but due to a different cause.
My solutions have been (besides the kdm bit):

1. boot to runlevel 3, then login, then run startx.

2. change in gconf /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list to true.
This sometimes gives me a user list or blank gdm screen.
If I don't get the list I do a Ctrl+Alt+F2, then login at the console, do kill -6 $(ps -A|grep -m 1 gdm-simple-gree|cut -d \ -f 2)this will kill it. Then I logout, then do a Ctrl+Alt+F1, now I have the list back.

I'm still looking for the "real" solution. - I'm now running F15 and the issue is moot.
