Usually battery charging is the responsibility of the firmware in the laptop, this is outside the control of the operating system. That is, there's little the OS can do wrong or right to 'break' battery stuff. More likely it would help to update the bios or the firmware.
However, the GUI desktop widgets can misinform you about battery information if they have coding errors.
