Skype Video/Microphone Not Working
Hey guys,
My internet videos and sounds work, but when i went into call skype test, they said my microphone was not working. I also tried to test my video and that is not working as well. So I believe my microphone/webcam is not installed properly. How do I check if its installed at all? How do I test it? Thanks!
Its a Microsoft LifeCam vx-3000
Thanks!

Re: Skype Video/Microphone Not Working
With the microphone, there may be an odd fix (worked for me anyway.)

Make sure you're a member of the video group as far as the webcam.
lucview is a good program for testing webcams. Not sure if it's available in Fedora or not.
I've never worked with an external webcam, so can't add too much more.

Re: Skype Video/Microphone Not Working
For whats its worth. I tried using a Microsoft LifeCam VX-6000
Everything was working fine as another webcam I have also worked but I was unable to get this working. I checked a web site (found by googling) and found out that a driver for it to work on Linux had not been written. I suspect that this is the case with yours but try what Dangermouse says you may be OK.
Does it work with cheese?

Re: Skype Video/Microphone Not Working
Does anyone know if skype works in the gnome version of fedora? I had a similiar issue with the sound and recording in another distro (linux mint kde) it didn't work for skype either so I installed the gnome version and it worked.

Re: Skype Video/Microphone Not Working
It probably depends upon hardware. I do know that Skype, from the skype.com's rpm works for me in Fedora, but I'm using dwm as my window manager. This was tested on both F18 and F19

Re: Skype Video/Microphone Not Working
Try using something that isn't made by a hostile adversary. Skrape is microsoft -- designed to work badly.
An alternative to skrape is google talk, or plain jane SIP. Use those instead. They will be far far easier to set up.

In this case, I would beg to differ. So far, Skype actually is working better since Microsoft bought them out. I think it gave them the funds needed to complete the current version, which is much better than the previous versions. Yes, there are dependencies which must be present for it to work and yes, it does have problems with some hardware (my Acer Aspire One 722 netbook, for example). However, it is easy to blame something on Skype when the actual problem may be in the PulseAudio system not picking up something like the netbook's built-in microphone properly.
I fully expect that eventually, Microsoft will want to make changes that will make it work on Windows and not on other platforms. The only hindrance is in Europe, where they would face more lawsuits for monopolistic practices if they were to do so. While Linux enthusiasts do not have funds to pursue legal remedies, Apple does.
