Get rid of name in top right corner of Gnome 3
As I'm the only user of the computer, and I'm not likely to forget my name, I'd like to just use the icon and not my name. I've browsed through some of the .js files, but can't figure out if and how it might be done.

Whatever name the account is under will appear there.

One more reason to avoid G3, the lack of configurability.

Re: Get rid of name in top right corner of Gnome 3
Ok, how about a safety / privacy concern then...
If I'm at a coffee shop, or the library, I don't want my name in bright letters where anyway within twenty feet can read it.
Think that's crazy? How do you think they finally found Osama? That's right, he took his laptop with Fedora15 with Gnome 3 to the coffee shop.

Re: Get rid of name in top right corner of Gnome 3
Go to the user menu, click on "My Account", click on the "-" and change the name to whatever you want if you are concerned about that

Or, run a liveCD when in public.

Re: Get rid of name in top right corner of Gnome 3
But that really shouldn't be necessary, Rahul. In gnome 2, all you had to do was remove it from the panel. I know a lot of people like the feel of G3, but the drastic change in configurability from G2 has been rough on a lot of users. Power management being a particular annoyance for me. G2 had a great gui, but I can't make gconf or dconf do what I want in G3. There's no way I should have had to put a shell script in /etc/pm/power.d in order to get control of my laptop's brightness.

I clicked on my name, pressed the spacebar, and bam, no more name. Pretty good workaround until such time as a more proper solution comes about. Thanks very much Rahul!

Uhm ... I'm thinking that is the proper solution. I just changed mine to: Cranston McGillicutty Snord. How's that for urban camouflage?! <.. ..>

Whether it should be necessary or not isn't up to me. I am not sure forum members want to point that to me often when I am offering a solution or workaround since I am not involved in GNOME design in any way. If you have a problem with power management, file a bug report?

Of which is what I thought the Alpha/Beta/RC phases were for... To report bugs to be repaired before the release..
Good advice any way you look at it...

Re: Get rid of name in top right corner of Gnome 3
If the goal is to report bugs, it should be filed via bugzilla. This is just a end user support forum

try reporting on bugzilla.redhat.com against Fedora 15 and on bugzilla.gnome.org, when it applies directly to gnome. Unfortunately bug reports reported against gnome in Red Hat's bugzilla are likely to be ignored, if not submitted upstream.
