f15 - gnome shell - remove username from top right corner
Hi all,
any chance, in Fedora 15, to remove the username and the related menu from the top right corner of gnome shell? I don't use IM of any sort, i'm not always connected and I don't like a menu remembering me my name and my availability status...
thanks!

Hi
I have already answered this earlier here but one more time,
Click on the user menu, "My Account" , click on unlock and then click on your name to change it to whatever you want.

That doesn't remove the menu though, does it? It only changes the appearance, from full name to login name (or whatever you set it to) but the menu itself is still there.

Hi
The question was only about the username. Not about removing the menu.

I'd say the question was more about removing the entire menu, not just the name

Hi
How about we avoid the guess work and let the OP asking the question to speak for themselves? Besides, even if was about both, I answered one part of it and there isn't a easy way to remove the entire menu anyway. You could write a extension to do so if you insist.

Agreed, this does seem to require some clarification.

It isn't a good idea to remove the menu as that is where the logout option is.

YES that's right ;-)
I usually have a shell to shutdown the machine.
And I don't use any Instant Messaging system...so I don't like "available" or "busy" concept.
many thanks.

Re: f15 - gnome shell - remove username from top right corner
Hi
Available/Busy is not merely tied a instant messaging system. It also allows you to specify that you are busy and don't want to be distracted by any system notifications. It keeps any notifications in the tray but won't show it to you.

I did some test and system notifications works in the same way on my f15 machine, both in available and busy status...also I don't understand how you can choose "solved" if the question was about removing the menu: someone will google for the same problem, will see "solved"...but just few seconds of happiness because he will not see any answer.

What do you call system notifications? Let's say you are using a laptop. Set the status to busy and pull the plug. You won't get the battery notification.

Re: f15 - gnome shell - remove username from top right corner
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I know I'm not cause I'm using fedora 15 and gnome 3. THat entire menu function has absolutely nothing to do with IM. "available, busy" "My Account System settings" "Lock Screen Switch user, and log out" and of course suspend, the meny is supposed to make things easier, Why would you wanna remove it?

Here is an extension which I think will do what you want. See http://fpmurphy.com/gnome-shell-exte...oim-1.0.tar.gz
