Is that hideous GRUB splash screen the current GRUB default?
Is that hideous GRUB splash screen with a totally unprofessional look the current GRUB default or somebody at Fedora should be blamed for it?

I have no clue. I dual boot with MINT-10 and therefore Mint's GRUB2 handles that. Which screen art is it?

Re: Is that hideous GRUB splash screen the current GRUB default?
If it is true that Arch Linux uses vanilla upstream packages, then the legacy grub default is no splash image and "color light-blue/black light-cyan/blue" for the menu screen.
In fact, my grub docs in Arch don't even list "splashimage" as a possible menu command, so the whole hideous thing might be a Fedora addition.

If you're referring to the "infinity-F" Fedora logo that comes up, I don't find it hideous at all. What's yours look like?

I think the Infinity "f" is Plymouth. I do get that .. or used to. Now I get the old F10 triplet of growing bars across the bottom. Lost the "f" in an update a while back, and never bothered to go fetch it again.

I think he means
Code:
gimp /boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

A sure tipoff is the splashimage command reference in the Fedora docs - clear and concise - that wasn't written by the original grub documenters (and then translated from the Martian).

No, the "infinity-F" Fedora logo image I like. It by the way doesn't show up in Fedora 15 during boot -- just a pitch black screen all the way down to the GDM login screen, uninterrupted by a single message -- this is what I see when I boot; pressing Esc no more displays any boot messages.
I mean:
/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
The image per se may not be the worst possible but when the GRUB menu is superimposed over it, the combination can vie for the dubious distinction of being the worst looking GRUB menu screen since I started using Linux in 2001.

I doubt default GIMP is going to know what to do with the compressed file.
...
Ayup. "Unknown file type."
However, once Archive manager got done with it, this is what was there on my install.

Gimp in SL6 opens the file OK.

Well ... I was going to go see if I was missing any plugins, but F15 locked up ... again.
Re-booting ... again.
