Question how to set IP in fedora 15 on virtualbox as guest OS?

Hi,

I've installed fedora 15 on virtualbox as my guest OS. I've configured bridged networking and I've set my router to assign an IP to it.

However, when it boots up,I have 2 devices shown via "ifconfig" which is "lo" and "p2p1" and none has the ip assigned to it.I'm unable to access the Internet.

How can I configure it to do so?I've tried following this tutorial: http://blog.zloether.com/2009/07/set...entosrhel.html
but the file "ifcfg-ethX" doesn't exist...it only has ifcfg-lo.....

I've installed fedora 15 spin edition which doesn't have a GUI for me to edit network settings...

Pls help..

Try the command 'dhclient eth0'... it worked for me.

i don't have eth0..

initially was using the "intel xx desktop" network adapter for virtualbox and I've tried switching to the others and refreshed the mac address as well but it doesn't work..

Re: how to set IP in fedora 15 on virtualbox as guest OS?

just some updates...

1) ifconfig -a
gives me 2 interfaces - lo and p16p1
I'm trying out the Intel PRO/1000 MT Server network adapter for virtualbox..

2) lspci
im not very sure but it seems like it doesn't show a network adapter except for a Ethernet controller.Other than that i have stuffs like host bridge, isa bridge, system peripheral..etc

3) lshw -C
command not found here

I tried running the above as root..I'm running fedora 15 security spin by the way...

any idea on configuration?

There's no eth0 because Fedora 15 doesn't use that naming convention :

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Featur...rkDeviceNaming

so the interface you want is that p2p1 one. There should be a ifcfg-p2p1 file to
match it

Re: how to set IP in fedora 15 on virtualbox as guest OS?

Hi

If ur host OS is connected to the internet, ur guest OS will automatically connects to the internet once it is booted. In my case I never had to configure a bridge network (its on default NAT). I have not set the guest OS to have internet connection automaticaly on boot, so I just need to left click on the network icon in the tray and choose default connection. I can browse internet as well as update through yum. Does ur host OS connects to internet through a corporate network?

Regards,
Anish

Marko has it in post #5.

But if that file doesn't exists use system-config-network, select "New" and follow the steps to create the file.

Post the relevant lines from "lspci -nnk" if the above doesn't help.

See if you have 'network-manager' package installed: if not install it from the DVD and reboot the virtual machine. See if it works.

Re: how to set IP in fedora 15 on virtualbox as guest OS?

Hi remy,
i faced the same problem while using guest OS in virtualbox or vmware. Just allow IP assignment by DHCP in the properties of IPv4 setting of your connection. It will automatically assign ip address to that connection. AND if it does not show any connection, then you can make one by going to "Network management or Network connections" maybe (don't remember exactly right now). Hope it works

Re: how to set IP in fedora 15 on virtualbox as guest OS?

I had the exact same problem while installing the GUI-less Fedora 15, and solved it by enabling networking for runlevel 3, and then properly setting up the p2p1 interface.

The forum is not allowing me to post the URL to my blog post with the solution details.

You'll have to google "larry rubin fedora 15 virtualbox dhcp" to find it.

Re: how to set IP in fedora 15 on virtualbox as guest OS?

The Ethernet Controller is the network adapter, so if you see one, it's good. It means that you have at least configured one . It's odd that you have an interface called p16p1, instead of the usual eth0.

Re: how to set IP in fedora 15 on virtualbox as guest OS?

Hi, thanks all for ur suggestions.

I have p2p1 shown from ifconfig. However I don't have the file so I created one manually.

I am having the IP assigned by DHCP already, which all works on other OS like centos, ubuntu except for fedora....

I followed larryrubin's guide to input the details into ifcfg-p2p1(the file I've just created manually and setup runlevel 3 & 5 for network as well.

I rebooted but still there's no IP assigned to p2p1....anything I may have missed?
