Laptop suspends when idle

Here's yet another clueless user's question. I have an old laptop that always had Rawhide (since Fedora 7 or so). It is on "non-stop rolling Rawhide" now. I mostly use it to do some Rawhide testing, so it sits on graphical login. Today, I found it suspended. Looks like it suspends itself if left to its own devices. Is this something that can be configured? I can tell it not to suspend when I am logged in.

You should be able to change the power settings from System Settings - Power. Check if "Put the computer to sleep when inactive on AC power" is enabled. If it is, disable it and voilà.

It seems to affect my own session only. If I log in, the laptop stays up. But if I do not log in, then it suspends even with this setting.

Maybe try logging in as root and changing the settings. Not sure it will work but it is easy to try.

This is a good idea, but gdm does not allow root login. I'm RTFM about it right now.

Can you "su -" in a terminal and then launch the tool from the command line? I really hate that paternalistic attitude they have in the Gnome world. If we wanted Macs we would buy them.

trying to change the setting as root is not the answer. all that would do is change the setting for root's GNOME session. I'm not sure if you can change it for gdm, but it may be possible via gsettings.
