Fedora 15 HDA Intel: no sound from pc speaker

Just installed Fedora 15, using default options. Sound works through headphone jack but not thru pc speaker. (Machine has no external speakers.) Puzzling, since an identical hardware-wise machine with same /etc/modprobe.d files works fine. Any suggestions appreciated.

Re: Fedora 15 HDA Intel: no sound from pc speaker

Check your settings in alsamixer (type alsamixer in a terminal and it will show up).
If you are confused with alsamixer, type 'man alsamixer' in the terminal.
It is pretty straightforward.

Also install pavucontrol and run it to adjust your pulse audio settings.

This will most probably solve your problems.

I hope..

Re: Fedora 15 HDA Intel: no sound from pc speaker

Thanks, we already tried all that and everything looked normal.

Today I had the bright idea to boot the machine to a F15 live cd. Bingo. Sound test does not produce any sound. On the other machine where sound works, same test, it *does* produce sound. Ergo, the machine has a hardware problem, nothing to do with Linux.

Re: Fedora 15 HDA Intel: no sound from pc speaker

Sorry for that.

This is a long shot, and I don't know anything about that laptop, but before you consider the speakers dead, maybe it might be an idea to look around in BIOS and see if there is an option to disable internal speakers.

Re: Fedora 15 HDA Intel: no sound from pc speaker

I have this problem also, it is not a hardware error at all; It is a fedora 15 error. On fedora 14, the sound worked fine. After a clean install of 15 I get no sound. What has changed that would cause that? I cant seem to get any answers period, maybe I should switch to ubuntu.

Help, please!

---------- Post added at 09:12 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:03 PM ----------

I just found this in my alsa-info:

Simple mixer control 'Speaker',0
Capabilities: pvolume pswitch penum
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Playback 0 - 64
Mono:
Front Left: Playback 0 [0%] [-48.00dB] [off]
Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [-48.00dB] [off]

But, when I open alsamixer everything looks normal as with pavucontrol.

How can I change this manually?

Re: Fedora 15 HDA Intel: no sound from pc speaker

I could be wrong, but I believe the small internal speaker on a desktop PC is controlled by different drivers than the sound card, so I doubt it is controlled by your Intel HDA driver. It is normally controlled by the BIOS at least until the OS is booted. Have you checked your BIOS settings? Is there any hardware switch that mutes this speaker? Could it be the particular kernel version you are running causing this issue?

Re: Fedora 15 HDA Intel: no sound from pc speaker

I have fixed my problem in alsamixer; I think I was previously using root when opening it. But, I unmuted the speakers and still no go.

I have uploaded my alsa-info.sh output file.

@David B.: No, I don't believe so because the speakers work with windows and have worked with Fedora 14. Yes, I have a mute button and it actively works.

I also wanted to note that I'm using an Intel express 945PM chipset.

Thanks.

Re: Fedora 15 HDA Intel: no sound from pc speaker

I'm using a fix I also used for Ubuntu.
Symptons: no audio from speakers but headphones work.
solution: create the file:

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

(this file seems to be missing in Fedora) and add the following line to it:

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

After alsa is reloaded all should be fine.
It can however turn out different for your model.

The above worked for Asus N53.
I'm also using the same fix for suspend and hibernate as with Ubuntu.

Re: Fedora 15 HDA Intel: no sound from pc speaker

FYI on fedora 18 I had to force beep_mode=1 to get beeper sound through snd-hda-intel.

Code:
$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/00local.conf
options snd-hda-intel beep_mode=1
