Problems with Gnome 3 & Nvidia Geforce GTX460M - fallback mode only

Hi All

I have a new laptop, running the 64 bit version of FC15 on an NVidia Geforce GTX 460M graphics card.

The first time it started after installing FC15 Gnome reported that no 3D acceleration was available and that it was reverting to forced fallback mode. Checking the systems settings/Graphics widget shows that the driver is "Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe" the Experience is fallback and that forced fallback is on. Changing this to off just ends up with it being reset to on at bootup.

My understanding is that the system is using the no proprietary drivers (nouveau??). But I can't find any info on the config. There's not even an xorg.conf. Is that correct?

Does/should 3D acceleration/Gnome 3 work with the nouveau drivers? Or do I need to use the proprietary drivers(don't really want to upgrade if I can help it)?

Can anyone suggest where to look for the X config? or perhaps a utility to change edit same?

Can anyone help with why 3D acceleration isn't working? Below is the output from dmesg that references nouveau.

I've also included the output from Leigh's suggested debugging commands (in the NVidia drivers tutorial.

Where to look next?

Any help'd be greatly appreciated

Hi All

Have solved this. Seems nouveau driver is the problem. Installing the proprietary nvidia drivers has fixed the problem. Gnome 3 is now working correctly.

Yeah, I have a desktop GTX460 - had the exact same problem. In fact Nouveau doesnt play nice with it in any distro whatsoever. Let that be a lesson to anyone with a GTX460 I guess, you will most likely have to use the proprietery drivers.
