After kernel-2.6.40.4-5 is installed, Fedora hangs during shutdown

Hello,

Has someone experienced the problem I see every time I try to shutdown the system?

After the kernel-2.6.40.4-5 has been installed (two days ago), Fedora 15 hangs with kernel panic (I will attach the photo of the screen next time I see it, since it leaves no trace in system logs), the first line I saw complains about dereferencing something at 0000...000228 (ellipsis stands for many zeroes).

Any suggestion is welcome, how to handle this, beyond posting to RedHat Bugzilla (in case there are known solutions).

Thanks.

I am having the same problem with the newest kernel. Anyone know what this is? Also, I am having memory problems with this kernel, I run out of memory just running Firefox and Thunderbird. Anyone else having this problem?

There's been tons of kernels with no major release distro testing. That translates to hundreds of commit's that have not had wide testing. That translates to kernels causing all kinds of problems. Boot one that works. I don't know if ubuntu worked out .39 or .38 or what kernel but it used to be ubuntu would work out one kernel and fedora would work out another kernel and other distro's would take it even further. Now we have kernel updates without testing misery.
Any kernel you see in update is going to either fix things on your system or cause you problems. Keep lots of old ones around.

That's not a real-life approach, since many a piece of software relies on a specific kernel's version.

The correct approach is to post a kernel bug and have it fixed.

Not, as far as I know, it hasn't.

However, you could provide useful feedback to those who are dealing with the bug:

Bug 739348 - Kernel bug dereferencing null pointer during shutdown hangs system

Thanks in advance.
