hdmi monitor with nouveau

Hey guys,

Im having trouble connecting a hdmi monitor to my dell xps 15. When I connect the monitor to the laptop the monitor screen remains black (but a connection is apparently recognized), the gnome monitor application thingy doesnt detect the monitor and neither does xrandr.

I am using the nouveau xorg-x11-drv-nouveau.x86_64
Version : 0.0.16
Release : 11.20100826git065576d.fc14

Currently I have no nvidia drivers installed.

dmesg might be interesting:

Does anybody have any idea what might be causing the problem and how I might be able to fix it?

thanks,
Joi

Hello, had this happen to me a few times. You will probably be forced to do a fresh install with the new monitor hooked up. You might also get into BIOS, and see if the monitor is recognized, and whether your video card is on-board of PCI.

Re: hdmi monitor with nouveau

It doesn't recognize the monitor because the EDID data is bad.

Check the cable, and if possible, try a replacement. If it still fails, try the VGA connection just for testing.

It is possible the cable may be bad and that is causing the EDID data to fail.

The cable works with a different notebook and i have the same problem with a replacement cable. Unfortunately i cannot test vga because my notebook doesbt have a connector. Damn modern hardware :-)

Does the monitor work with the other notebook? It is possible that the monitor itself is "broken" in that the EDID data is invalid at all times.

sorry that I wasnt precise. Both cable and monitor have been tested with a different notebook and they work perfectly. In fact a colleague of mine works with this monitor both with windows and linux.

Re: hdmi monitor with nouveau

Then it is down a bug in the DRM handling (and EDID error) causing problems.

Can you try an older kernel?

Hey,
I did a minor kernel update (2.6.35.14-97.fc14.x86_64) some minutes ago after the kernel release just now. dmesg output changed to

[ 242.044807] [drm] nouveau 0000:02:00.0: plugged HDMI-A-2

after plugging in the monitor. The broken EDID messages dont show up anymore. This is good right? Ill try booting into an older kernel.

Ok so the older kernel didnt help but apparently randomly rebooting did. I have rebooted into the current kernel and now the screen shows a fedora icon with a blue background. However, I cannot access the screen. xrandr shows only the laptop screen and the gnome monitor thingy doesnt detect it.

tail /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows

[ 84.568] (II) intel(0): EDID for output VGA1
[ 84.578] (II) intel(0): EDID for output HDMI1
[ 84.579] (II) intel(0): EDID for output DP1

at the end and before that lines upon lines about my notebook monitor I suppose.
