ah! If you had used yum to remove KDE, it is possible that it removed some libraries that were shared with GNOME. Whether it would result in fallback mode is something I do not know. The only solution I can think of is to reinstall gnome-shell.
yum reinstall gnome-shell
There could be other easier/better solutions though ...
