f17 alpha tc2, update brings a slow system (really slow...)
Hi all,
I donwloaded the alpha tc2 f17 KDE LiveCD and booted it on all my systems.
In my main worksation, an FX6100 with 990FX chipset and 16GB RAM, after the
first update (the first boot after install was ok) the system SLOW, sllllooooooow.
I have never seen anything like that. Good this is a pre-alpha.
I have opened bugzilla bugreport: 795050
Basically:
* nearly one hour boot-time (aproximatelly) (the system's boot drive is a SSD)
* due to the slownes, only using xorg/failsafe option works (it is not possible to use another vt in multiuser).
* bootinh in single user was slightly faster, about 40 minutes.
* the system is so slow that even trying to disable a service may result in a d-bus timeout sometimes.
* bash and most of the commands do work at the expected speed.
did anybody experienced anything similar?

I launched perf top and let it for some minutes in order for it to stabilize:
# perf top
shows 26% to something "__module_address"
and 20% "lock_is_held".
top/htop does not show any strange cpu consumption.

with a lot of Debug stuff turned on during Alpha etc, it'll slow the computer

The amount of slowness described is way beyond what usual debug stuff causes, IMHO.

I got the same results here.
booting from the LiveCD was painfully slow. I was able to start the boot, go fix me a sandwich, eat it and get back before it finished booting
However, once it booted, I didn't notice a really bad slowdown, at least not more than the usual debug code causes.

Re: f17 alpha tc2, update brings a slow system (really slow...)
F17 Alpha TC2 KDE LiveCD boots, installs and firstboots ok (without updates). in AMD FX6100 + SABETOOTH 990FX
* The AMD system becomes SLOW only after updating the installed F17 Alpha TC2 KDE system.
F17 Alpha TC2 KDE LiveCD boots ok on an Intel Core2 Laptop (Asus ul80vt) and Core i5 (Dell e4310)
F17 Alpha TC3 KDE LiveCD boots ok on an Intel Core2 Laptop (Asus ul80vt) and Core i5 (Dell e4310)
F17 Alpha TC3 KDE LiveCD boots SLOW on the AMD system (it has the updates blunded), i get firstboot run from the LiveCD.
So there seems to be an issue between f17 and AMD FX systems.
@DBelton, is your system an Intel or an AMD one?
I only performed one instalation (the AMD system).

Near hour boot time? There's a prob there somewhere. If i were to guess, i'd say it had something to do with the new hardware arch you're using. Perhaps even something to do with your SSD. I find it very hard to believe that debugging would slow your system down that much

with Debugging on i highly doubt it would slow a PC down that much also. has to be a hardware problem

The system I was running it on was an intel dual core P4. Still haven't figured out why it took so long to boot, but getting ready to try out the later RC4 and see if it still has issues.

Re: f17 alpha tc2, update brings a slow system (really slow...)
Solved with kernel update. I reinstalled from rc2 (the one that boots normal) and
apply the kernel update manually then updated the rest of the packages.
