Safest method to recover data from erased ext4 partition (possibly LVM)?

Hello everyone.

I am currently looking for the safest/most-likely-to-work method to recover files from an erased ext4 partition in a laptop. The partition was accidentally deleted while attempting to install Ubuntu (not by me of course), and although the installation process was promptly stopped to prevent the data from being overwritten, the disk does not remember the partitions.

The partition might have been in a LVM volume. Can anyone please offer me some advice of how to proceed?

I did a bit of my homework and found about this utility: ddrescue, which might fit the bill, but any further guidance would be most appreciated. The disk can be transferred to an external enclosure.

I've had TWO issues where I needed to get back partitions that were deleted, both times it was my BACKUPS. What I used was TESTDISK, it's a bit confusing at first but you'll easy get it. There are guides on the internet, too.

I must say though, it would help if you knew what you were looking for, especially if you have to do a DEEP SCAN, as this will pull up EVERYTHING that can be pulled up that was ever on that disk. But even a LITTLE info on it will help.

Also, this may NOT be the safest (you can actually mess things up worse if not careful) but it sure is one that WILL WORK!
