how do I open powerpoint files

Hi all,

I have friends who send me .pps files but while I have vlc and ffmpeg, my installation doesn't open them. My fedfor search didn't bring anything up.

Does anyone know of something that will do the job?

Install Libreoffice Impress:
Code:
yum install libreoffice-impress

Hi James,

Thanks for your response.

I ran your code and installed Impress. Then I right-clicked on a .pps file and Impress was at the top of the popup. However, when I clicked on it another popup came up labeled Filter with a large list that didn't include Power Point or .pps.

It did have Help so I went there and clicked Impress but all I could find for Power Point was how to export as Power Point. In Search nothing came up for Open Power Point.

Any way around or through this road block?

Re: how do I open powerpoint files

I also tried impress without any luck. seems there is a bug in libreoffice and it won't open .pps files
Note: also downloaded and installed OpenOffice 3.3 which is supposed to open them and it won't either.
Did find a note said to ask the author to resend in .ppt format which both LibreOffice and OpenOffice will open.
Sorry but seems there is more work to be done on LibreOffice.

Re: how do I open powerpoint files

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your response. Just another reason to keep XP.

When I posted the new thread there were three other similar posts shown. The first two from 2008 or 9, the third, 2005, all re open office.

What's that French saying? The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Thanks again for the clarification,
jeb

Re: how do I open powerpoint files

Which version of Fedora and LibreOffice are you using?

As I recall there was an old bug related to that Filter dialogue where the path to the templates directory was wrong - you might check whatever it is showing against your actual path.

You can also try changing the extension from .pps to .ppt or vice versa and see if that makes a difference.

Or you could install Fedora 17 Alpha, where LibreOffice 3.5.1.1 opens both types of files without a hitch.

Or just rename the file to .ppt – apparently it's the same format, just different default opening modes (edit vs. show) in PowerPoint.

EDIT: Just noticed sonoran already suggested that...

I don't see the problem in 3.5.

Hi Sonoran,

The LO is: libreoffice-impress.x86_64 1:3.4.5.2-5.fc16
Since you mentioned 3.5.1.1 I did a yum update libreoffice-impress.x86_64 to find:
No Packages marked for Update

I don't know where to look for the Fedora 16 x86-64 Live Desktop.iso version but it's about 2 weeks old.

Unfortunately tracing paths is farther up the learning curve than I am.

Changing to .ppt brings up the photos but not the audio. However I can wait until F17 Delta for that, eh?

Thanks to all for the multiply-reinforced info/help. Perhaps I could interest you folks to look in Software for:
problem with AutoPlus and skype

If nothing else it's one indication of my level of experience(I won't say expertise <8~)
