Cool Grub Splash, For those interested (testers needed)

This is what I've been working on referencing back to one of my posts referring to grub being hacked.

Finally got it working as intended for the most part using fedoras grub2. This means only users of Fedora with grub2 need try doing this when I have finished correcting a couple of bugs( not really bugs but options that need to be fixed for a better look.

See the attachment Grub-Spalsh.

This is NOT just a background for grub but the hole enchilada, background image, boot menu and icons.

If you have any suggestions from looking at the attached image please let me know.

===============

Update. just another day or so and I'll have the how-to complete. I've also updated the boot splash to give it a little more appeal from the original screen shot. Add menu options to get to the grub menu itself like e for edit boot line and such. See the new attachment. Also I've decided that I'm going to zip it and make it available on the web since there are many files included that were not previously included in the original setup. When I have the download site setup completed it will be available to all who so desire to use it. I'll post the site address within the next day or so.

==================

Sorry for the long delay people.

I've run into some personal issues that need attending to that will consume most of my time but I will continue to work on this when my time allows to do so. Everything does work as it is currently setup but there is much to be done yet. Therefore I'm making the link to the files available now and will update as time permits. The how to document can be confusing at spots as reported by some testers. So read it in full first!

Here's the link for the how-to document and you will find the link to download the files needed inside this document.
dl.dropbox.com/u/69319539/Grub splash how-to-rev2.odt

Also glennzo has made a great install script that will do the work for you!

Glennzo feel free to post your install script to help users install this package. I'll be in touch with the updates as soon as I have them completed.

Again THANK YOU GLENNZO for the install script.

I know this setup works on F17 but for F16 I can't really say as I have no F16 machine for testing. As I said in one of my posts you MUST be running Grub2 version 1.99 for this to work. So if you have this grub2 version it may or may not work in F16 since some things may or may not be applicable to your installation of grub 1.99 as reported by some testers.

I'm a bit irritated by the copyright note at the bottom center, but besides that....
SWEET!

What copyright?

That is to change your keyboard map!

There is nothing illegal about this.!

Your are talking about the key_map aren't you?

When I get it finished I'll post my notes as a how to. There's really nothing to package. You can use almost any image of your choosing.

It's a matter of editing grub files in the various locations of the system.

I could post some of the stuff that needs to be changed now but with out having a proper How-to may NOT be such a good idea because if only a portion of it is done you may have problems booting and I don't want to be responsible for people borking their systems because the How-to isn't posted in its entirety.

Once its completed I'll post the How-To so that it minimizes problems setting it up.

With a little more work I should have the how-to completed within a week once I finish the other options.

Mind you I don't have any errors popping up right now but I would prefer to have it completed before posting the how-to.

Looks very nice especially the entry items, although the text is way too hard to read (or is that by design, or is this Android screen too little?).

I do have to say that some of this work was done already by Daniel Tschudi which I found and continued to make it fully functional now.

So I have to give credit where credit is doe, but alot of it I have customized to actually make it work on current fedora systems.

Eventually it is supposed to be the default grub2 splash for Fedora!

But I'm a little impatient and decided I couldn't wait and therefore decided to get it working now!

And to be honest I don't even know if he is even working on it any more since it was stated for legacy grub(.99) to start

It's probably the screen your viewing it on. The text looks fine on my machine and there is no problem reading it at all. Plus I had to resize the screen shot to be able to upload it to the site which did make things look a little fuzzy!

Thanks all for the compliments.

As stated this was partially completed I just picked it up and finishing it off for all to use if they so desire.

It probably could be packaged but I'm not quit sure how to do it.

Thanks again for the compliments!

Re: Grub Splash, For those interested

If you'd like someone to test your changes (in order to have your future howto kind of verified), i'd be happy to test this for you on my netbook!
And dont mind if its not working, i love to break things!

I don't think the size of your Android screen is the problem, since it looks just as hard to read on my 23" LCD monitor and 20" CRT monitor. Black text on a dark background is never a good idea, so hopefully that will change.

The info on how to create Grub2 themes has been around for a while, so it's good that this one will be available in a future version of Fedora. I don't normally care for Ubuntu that much, but they have made some nice Grub2 themes which (in my opinion) look better than this one; you can see some here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Themes

That is correct Ubuntu has had grub themes for quit sometime but I've never seen it function or work on Fedora before.

As I said previously you can modify it to your wants once I post the how-to. That includes the background image, fonts, font colors and sizes, not to mention various icons and such.

The power of grub2 is what makes this work and trying to do it off of some of the guides that are on the net can be dangerous since most require editing major grub files and if you make a mistake get ready for rescue mode because your machine will no longer boot!

I'm not saying that you can't try, just be careful if you use the guides on the net because Fedora goes about it totally different then Ubuntu just as Fedora does many other things differently then Ubuntu and many other flavors of Linux!
