Linux On Pads/Tablets

Anyone know why we haven't seen any pads that allow us to load up our favorite Linux distro?

Are there technical issues that haven't been resolved or is it that Linux has not caught up with the hardware, yet?

I also wonder how software patents will affect the adoption of Linux on pads.

Any thoughts?

Re: Linux On Pads

The Vivaldi tablet runs a distro known as Mer Core. Conceivably it should also run other distros in principle.

I guess the reason we don't often see products like the Vivaldi is the market appeal. The 99% (don't crucify me for using this over-politicized number) don't need a hacker's tablet so there's no money in mass production.

Re: Linux On Pads

The Vivaldi looks interesting. OpenPeak had planned on releasing a Linux based device called "Open Tablet" but changed their mind and decided to go with Android.

I see that Vivaldi is planning on a 10" pad.

Maybe, we will soon be seeing true "Open Pads".

Re: Linux On Pads

Just tell an Android user that his device runs with Linux. He will be astonished that it is such a robust and simple OS. That's why noone would try to sell a tablet with another Linux than Android.
The WeTab is known to run Distributions like Ubuntu, btw.

Well, you said no one would sell a tablet with any Linux variant other than Android. Then, you pointed to someone who does.

I see it runs Meego out of the box.

Some might not trust a googleroid based mobile tracking device to maintain their privacy. I wouldn't.

I understand some success is being made installing various Linux distros on Archos tablets.
