Ubuntu: “We’re not Linux”
Now, they're going too far!
Quote:
I was getting set to download and test the latest Ubuntu release (right now in beta), and decided it might be wise to skim the release notes to see what’s new.
Under “new features,” I spied this: “Beta-1 includes the 3.2.0-17.27 Ubuntu kernel which is based on the v3.2.6 upstream stable kernel.” The Ubuntu kernel? Give me a break, guys.

Zinger!
Quote:
Ubuntu is different from the commercial Linux offerings that preceded it because it doesn't divide its efforts between a high-quality commercial version and a free, 'community' version. The commercial and community teams collaborate to produce a single, high-quality release, which receives ongoing maintenance for a defined period. Both the release and ongoing updates are freely available to all users.

Well, they mentioned linux there and you can just feel the love, can't you?

I foresee some revisionist history in Ubuntu's future.

Re: Ubuntu: “We’re not Linux”
I wonder if we can get Stallman to hector them into calling it GNU/Ubuntu ? Or Gnubuntu ?
I suppose that not calling it Linux is a "good thing" if they've added a lot of unsupportable features.

They deserve credit for popularizing linux amongst "common people" but such statements are downright ridiculous. I wonder how much farther they will go!

Re: Ubuntu: “We’re not Linux”
I fail to see the outrage.
Fedora, "Contributing to the Fedora kernel"
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Kernel
Debian, ]"Insurance against system malfunction is provided by the kernel compile option "Magic SysRq key" (SAK key) which is now the default for the Debian kernel.
www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch09
And Liquorix Kernel and Zen Kernel and etc...etc.. etc..

Re: Ubuntu: “We’re not Linux”
^^^ There's always been a healthy rivalry between Ubuntu and Fedora, and their forums. We're just have a bit of fun at Ubuntu's expense. Although it looks like they're renumbering the kernel, which is a bit strange.

I do remember Stallman recommending us the gNewSense distro on an occasion. It's based on Ubuntu but is supposed to maximize GNU conformance.
http://www.gnewsense.org/
The project looks quite inactive.

IMO ubuntu should be renamed "Parasite Linux" (note the lack of smilies as I'm not joking).

Re: Ubuntu: “We’re not Linux”
I don't really have a problem with "Ubuntu Kernel", "Fedora Kernel" etc as each base distro, by it's very nature, will be be adding /removing / tweaking the vanilla kernel to suit it's own purpose... you can't just throw a Debian kernel into a Fedora installation and expect to work, right? (AFAIHT <-- As far as I have tried )

Ubuntu doesn't have the right to rename the kernel.
