Question Collecting video output from tv

My tv allowes for an hdmi connection to another monitor so that the screen can be seen from both at the same time.
All the info about tv etc and fedora is dealing with output from fedora to a tv, but I want to do the opposite. There is an HDMI port on my computer but I think that it is normally used to output a signal instead of inputing it.
Does anyone know know how to input the hdmi signal and display it or save it?

Martyn

Re: Collecting video output from tv

You basically want to use your pc as a video recorder right ?
It can be done but I think you have to capture the signal from source and specific hardware is required, my ps3 can use a box called playtv which can record to the ps3 hard drive, I'm not aware of any linux software that can do that but I'm sure someone here might prove me wrong.

Re: Collecting video output from tv

To display the signal just connect the cable to your monitor ;-)

HDMI to DVI cables or adapters are available if your monitor only has DVI input.

This should work as long as your monitor supports HDCP.

You can't connect the cable to your computer, because you only have HDMI output and usually the tv signal is protected by HDCP.

What kind of tv signal do you use? Cable, sattelite, terrestrial or iptv?

To watch tv on your computer there are programs like mythtv and if you want to turn your computer into a vcr there's this great program called vdr. They're all available in the fedora or rpmfusion repositories.

All you need is a DVB card in your computer. A simple DVB-T stick will do for testing.

Re: Collecting video output from tv

George,
Thanks for the info. Not quite what I had in mind, was hoping that a 'correct' driver would take the hdmi as input on the comp. I don't have another 'monitor' with hdmi. Will do some searching, but can you tell me what the vdr & dvb-t capabilities are (generally).

TIA
