Had audio in FC 15, upgraded to 16, and now no sound at all.

I am not completely newbie, but then I am not a programmer. So I still consider myself a learner. In any case, I upgraded to FC 16 using preupgrade, and it even tested itself to see if the upgrade was OK and thus upgraded. Afterwards, I had no audio.

It did however, see my Realtek on board HD ATI SB (ALC883) card in every way. Kinfo, ALSA, and Pulseaudio saw it and said everything was good. However, there was no sound anywhere!

I did some research and always found that there is still a problem between alsa and pulseaudio. I just do not understand why the sound worked in FC 15 but not in FC 16.

As is I then ran an ALSA Information Script v 0.4.60, right now being tense I forgot how I did that, but here is the result (although it is quite big so will be in parts):

Please forgive the size of all this. I have been told to be as explanatory as humanly possible so adain please forgive me.

Oh yeah, I checked alsamixer as well and it allowed me to see my sound card setup.

In any case, then decided to acquire the firmware from Realtek, attempted to install it and it ran into errors as soon as it tried to remove dev/snd and failed. Fedora apparently would not allow the firmware installation to remove dev/snd and immediately after that there were more errors or failures which terminated the installation.

I thus decided it must be a serious problem with alsa and pulseaudio as was a few Fedora installations back. So I did as I used to do and tried to remove pulseaudio. Of course, with my luck being as it is, Fedora refused to allow me to completely remove pulseaudio. In fact, it insisted on removing almost everything in order to remove pulseaudio. So I only removed some of it, like the libs, but then it removed Wine. I put Wine back and it immediately put most of pulseaudio back in. What good is that? WIne works with alsa as well!

Anyway, I then rebooted, but afterwards noticed kmix was on dummy output. So I then checked alsamixer and it said I was only using pulseaudio. F6 would not show anything except default which is now pulseaduo.

I then checked dev/snd and it only has;

I just got FC 16 to see my sound card again by downloading and installing (manually) the latest Realtek Linux Alsa driver, but still no sound. In fact I tried to check alsamixer in root so I could officially unmute or mute whatever was not the way it should be and I got this;

cannot open mixer: Connection refused


So it does appear that pulseaudio is screwing the program.

What do I do about it? Will someone PLEASE help me?

My only idea right now would be to install the Pulse Audio volume control (package name = pavucontrol )
and run it to confirm the sound channel is set right (make sure the channel isn't going to an unused output like your HDMI port) and to confirm the output isn't muted.

yum install pavucontrol

then run it and check for the channel and mute settings in these tabs: Playback, Configuration and Output Devices

Configuration: should be sensible value like "Analog Stereo Duplex" or "Analog Stereo Output" and not "Off" or "Analog Stereo Input"
Output Devices: Make the "Port:" Analog Speakers or Analog Headphones (depending on what you're using) and volume sliders up
Playback: The correct application showing and the mute button un-muted and the volume sliders over towards the right
