installing brother mfc-5490cn

hi everyone,

I installed Fedora 16 and now Im trying to get my brother MFC-5490CN all-in-one printer to work. On the Brother website I found this article explaining how to do it: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com...tion_prn3.html

I downloaded the LPR drivers for my printer and followed the steps. After completing the steps nothings happens. I can print, fedora doesn't see the printer. Does anyone know how to help me?

yours,

bernhard

also install the cupswrapper driver: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com...tml#MFC-5490CN

to configure the printer go to http://localhost:631/ or use the printer configuration tool.

Re: installing brother mfc-5490cn

Thanks fenrin. I installed the cups driver. The printer now shows up in my printer menu but I can print. It says that the printer is unreacheble. I tried pinging the printer but the result is a message: Destination host unreacheble.

The IP address is correct! I confirmed this. Everyone else in my network can print from their computers (all windows machines).

Description: Brother MFC-5490CN

Driver: Brother MFC-5490CN CUPS v1.1 (color, 2-sided printing)
Connection: lpd://192.168.1.75/binary_p1
Defaults: job-sheets=none, none media=na_letter_8.5x11in sides=one-sided

Re: installing brother mfc-5490cn

I don't have any experience with network printers under linux, but maybe you could check the firewall settings. Maybe you have to enable port 631/udp (Network Printing Client).

if you don't have a gui for the firewall configuration yet and would like to use one, you could install system-config-firewall. There you can easily open this port.

Re: installing brother mfc-5490cn

I remembered a thread where some people found a solution to their brother device issue.

you could try the steps in post 14 of following thread:
Brother Scanner not detected by Fedora 14

Re: installing brother mfc-5490cn

hi fenrin,

You're going to laugh but the problem was that the utp connector on the cable connected to the printer was malfunctioning. I replaced the connector and now the printer is working.
