fedora 16 dovecot / outlook 2010 connection issue

Hello All,

I've sent up sendmail and dovecot and am able to send/receive email via the squirrelmail webmail with no problem. I would like to be able to do the same with outlook 2010, but when I try to set up the account, I receive an error message during account test that outlook is unable to connect to imap. Is there something I need to enable in dovecot.conf or one of its conf files in conf.d to make connection possible? 143 is open on the router and firewall. Thanks.

Does anyone know the steps to take to make dovecot-2.0.20-1.fc16.i686 work with Outlook 2010? Thanks.

Dear dysphorichermit,

I never tested dovecot/F16, but dovecot and Outlook 2010 should cooperate fine.
The default dovecot configuration enables IMAP for everywhere, so in principle it should work.

Do you mean with "open on router and firewall" the firewall to the outside world?
It could be that an iptables firewall on the Fedora server is active and blocking port 143.

Can you telnet to <emailserver>:143 from your Outlook client? (telnet not standard installed in W7)

Please check with "netstat -an | grep 143 " on the server for
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:143 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN

I am in the process of installing dovecot right now.. I have outlook already on my windows computer. I can document the steps of trying to get dovecot to work with outlook 2010. I should have it up and going in a couple days.
