USB to Serial converter

I have FC16 installed and have been using minicom to connect to a cisco switch that I have to study for a CCNA. I was curious how I go about disconnecting the usb to serial converter from a USB port. Most usb stuff you can use umount but that does not seem to work in the case. What command safely allows me to remove this usb device. It uses console port ttyUSB0

Re: USB to Serial converter

What makes you think you need to do anything other than physically removing the device from the USB port?

I have a USB to Serial converter - when I've closed my serial session I just pull the cable out - job done.

Wink Re: USB to Serial converter

There are no data writes going on (apart from possibly a log file) - or cached data that may be lost or corrupted (as would be with an external harddrive or usb stick) so pull that plug with confidence my friend

Re: USB to Serial converter

1 - STOP SHOUTING.

umount is only for filesystems.
Imagined I'd find a udevd rule (look under /etc/udev) for these - but not so.

Re: USB to Serial converter

USB is a hotplug system. Just yank it.

Re: USB to Serial converter

Appreciate the response everyone gave. Just wanted to make sure it was not going to cause an issue.

I guess if I would have stopped and thought about it, I should have deduced its not a filesystem so I shouldn't have to do anything special.
