Re: VM Workstation 8 and Fedora 17 - C header files matching your running kernel

Have you tried our new 64 bit operating system?

If you boot kernel.i686 3.3.7-1.fc17 it should be working out of the box ;-)

Otherwise try to remove kernel.i686 3.3.7-1.fc17, kernel-devel.i686 3.3.7-1.fc17 and kernel-headers.i686 3.3.7-1.fc17 and then install the PAE packages for kernel-devel and kernel-headers.

You might have to create a symlink, because apparently the PAE headers are using the same directory name (without PAE extension) as the normal 32 bit headers or when vmware asks just point it to the correct directory. Something like

Code:
/usr/src/kernels/3.3.7-1.fc17.i686/include
or whatever it's called.

Re: VM Workstation 8 and Fedora 17 - C header files matching your running kernel

i don't know i instaled only the i386 - DVD inkl. fedora updates.

but i removed the kernel.i686 3.3.7-1.fc17, kernel-devel.i686 3.3.7-1.fc17 and kernel-headers.i686 3.3.7-1.fc17 and installed the pae once.

Re: VM Workstation 8 and Fedora 17 - C header files matching your running kernel

I confirm the problem with fedora 17 64 bit installation.

The problem is that it fails to compile virtual network device.

The patch the deagel notes refers to vmware 8.0.2 and does not apply to fedora 17 and vmware 8.0.3

I have installed everything it is required for vmware to compile, but it fails.

I use vmware 5 years and for the first time I have such a problem.

Does anybody know any hack to make it work?

Re: VM Workstation 8 and Fedora 17 - C header files matching your running kernel

Ok people, I have the solution to our problem.

Extract the file and as administrator run ./patch-modules_3.4.0.sh

The patch applies for Fedora 17 and vmware 8.0.3

I presume you have installed all necessary packages (kernel-devel, gcc, etc).

Works like a charm

PS: I found the solution on this post (http://weltall.heliohost.org/wordpre...for-linux-3-2/) and I changed the patching script for the proper vmware version.

PS2: The solution I provide applies for the compiling the network device problem but not the wrong kernel header files you have.

Vmware always has this problem until they release a new any-to-any patch.

Hope you don't have an AMD CPU ---> http://communities.vmware.com/thread/404085?tstart=0

Re: VM Workstation 8 and Fedora 17 - C header files matching your running kernel

@george_toolan I have AMD dual core +6000 cpu

I applied the patch and everything worked. Right now I am installing centos 6.0 to a virtual machine.

My fedora version is 17 64bit and my hardware is 3 years old.

The link of the post probably talks for other version of vmware (8.0.2). We are talking about vmware 8.0.3

the patch also works for vmware player 4.0.4 on fedora 17.
just changed plreqver=4.0.3 to 4.0.4 in patch-modules_3.4.0.sh.
