Nouveau fails with external monitor (F16, nouveau, ION)
Hi guys,
I'm having troubles with my Asus 1215n and fedora 16. When I try to connect to an external monitor, the whole systems slows extremly down (unusable slow). Except when I switch to a console (CTRL+ALT+Fx), then there is no problem.
Installing the nvidia-drivers doesn't work either.
Do you have any ideas where the problem could be? Following some logs, for further informations just ask :-)
Thanks in advance.

Re: Nouveau fails with external monitor (F16, nouveau, ION)
Update 1:When I plug in the VGA-Cable BEFORE turning on the netbook, Gnome 3 falls into fallback (2D) mode, but it works without any errors.
May be related to Bug 679601 ( link) ?
Update 2:With Linux Mint 13 (MATE) it works until 1600x1200 (which is the maximum supported from the external monitor)
Fedora 16 (Gnome 3) crashed with various resolutions.
Do you need more information?
Greetings

Re: Nouveau fails with external monitor (F16, nouveau, ION)
You have two graphics chips. Do you really need the nvidia chip? Have you tried to disable the chip?
The intel chip should be able to handle a vga monitor and resolutions up to 1920x1200

I've read that its not possible (unless you use the bumbleeproject) to use the ION-Chip. I turned it off with the acpi_call module, but it didn't work either.
So I think the intel chip is in use, and it handles the lvds perfectly. May it crashes because it has to handle 2 monitors (lvds is about 1300x700 and the external 1600x1200) or should the chip be able to handle both?

Re: Nouveau fails with external monitor (F16, nouveau, ION)
How much memory does your netbook have? If you're running out of memory it will be really slow. Try
Is there an option in your BIOS to change the memory consumption of your graphic chip(s)?
Btw the "nouveau" messages above are for the ION chip. The intel graphics use a different driver.

Re: Nouveau fails with external monitor (F16, nouveau, ION)
Thanks for your reply.
The memory and CPU consumption wasn't that high when I plugged the monitor in. (From those 3GB were 2.3 GB free, CPU is idle more or less..).
Unfortunately my BIOS doesn't have anything about this.
So I tried following:
Switched into SingeUser-Mode and removed the nouveau-driver via:
Code:
modprobe -r nouveau
According to the (empty) output of:
Code:
lsmod | grep nouveau
It was removed successfully. The video driver was now the i915.
Then I switched back into runlevel 5, plugged the monitor in and it crashed again.
Some other interesting stuff: - It also crashes if I plug the monitor in, even if the monitor doesn't have power (power supply not plugged in)
- At boot up I'm getting those messages:
Code:
[ 3.024953] [drm:intel_dsm_platform_mux_info] *ERROR* MUX INFO call failed
[ 3.024998] [drm:intel_dsm_platform_mux_info] *ERROR* MUX INFO call failed

Re: Nouveau fails with external monitor (F16, nouveau, ION)
Hi,
I just tested it with the 20" Monitor and got following results: (First, I took gnome into fallback-mode).
- 1280x1024 and below worked ( display cloned automatically )
- 1600x1200 (60Hz), which is also configured on the monitor, crash
It was the same when I disabled the nouveau-driver.
If you need any further informations/logs, please let me know.
Greetings & thanks in advance

Re: Nouveau fails with external monitor (F16, nouveau, ION)
It's the same with Fedora 17...
Can I provide some more information? Anyone an idea how to solve it?
