Install Java-Plugin to Firefox 22 on Fedora 19

Hello everybody!

I tried to install the java plugin in to firefox, but i could not do that.
I found some solution to older version of firefox just like this:
Code:
alternatives --install /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so libjavaplugin.so /usr/java/default/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so 20000
But it doesnt work. I am using Firefox 22, and i tried with Java 1.7.0_25 on Fedora 19.

I dont know how should i start to install this plugin!

Thank you so much any assistance!

Re: Install Java-Plugin to Firefox 22 on Fedora 19

hello edfromhadria!

java plugin using java 1.7.0_25 on Fedora 19 works well if you set the correct path of your libnpjp2.so file. For that first you check where your java 1.7.0_25 is installed in /usr directory and set the correct path.

I am using fedora 19 amd64. Jjava 1.7.0_25 works fine in my desktop installation.

Re: Install Java-Plugin to Firefox 22 on Fedora 19

CronoCloud, I did that method but my Firefox say "No enabled plugins found".

tlinsley, I tried your if !1 0 solution, but it doesnt work because i cannot find javaws or libnpjp2.so file in java path. (/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.7.0-openjdk-1.7.0.25.x86_64/jre/bin/) Where should be there files?

kuppuswamy, Where is that libnpjp2.so file, and how could i set the correct path?

edfromhadria !
If you installed 64bit Java 1.7.0_25 version then your libnpjp2.so file path may be /usr/local/jdk1.7.0_25/jre/lib/amd64 otherwise the path is /usr/local/jdk1.7.0_25/jre/lib/i386

Re: Install Java-Plugin to Firefox 22 on Fedora 19

You must install the following package in order to get the browser plugin :
Code:
icedtea-web
But maybe you're looking for the official Java plugin? In this case, I can't help, but I wanted to share the solution I found for myself ;-)

Re: Install Java-Plugin to Firefox 22 on Fedora 19

I solved the problem! I downloaded manually the jdk, and then i could find that libnpjp2.so file what i need.
The next command solved it to me:
su -c 'alternatives --install /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so libjavaplugin.so.x86_64 /usr/etc/jdk1.7.0_45/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so 20000'

I've seen that example alternatives command too, I have a problem with it because it depends on the existence of the "default" linkage existing in the /usr/java. "/usr/java" is the typical place the Oracle JDK goes to but the default link won't exist unless the system user makes it themselves. "default" is not a side effect of your unzipping/untarring the tar.gz file from Oracle and so that's going to be error prone.

A more likely 'alternatives' command that would work would be:
Quote:
alternatives --install /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so libjavaplugin.so /usr/java/jdk1.7.0_45/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so 20000
but that "jdk1.7.0_45" would change depending on what version you installed. What I usually do is make a symbolic link in /usr/java called "jdk7" and another called jdk8, I then point the jdk7 to my actually installed jdk1.7.0_## version and jdk8 to /usr/java/jdk1.8.0 (JDK8 being the early access development for Java 8). Using links has the advantage that I don't have to change my Java IDEs, they just point to /usr/java/jdk7 all the time. Also, the alternatives is also set to point the JDK7 to /usr/java/jdk7 so I don't have to reset the alternatives command each time.

Re: Install Java-Plugin to Firefox 22 on Fedora 19

1. What is installed?
(This is for a x86_64 machine)

rpm -qa | grep ^jre
# jre-1.7.0_40-fcs.x86_64

# check www.java.com
# download newest

# last_jre: jre1.7.0_45

sudo rpm -Uvh jre-7u45-linux-x64.rpm

2. The alternative part

# check which java is set
sudo /usr/sbin/alternatives --config java

# check which plugin is set
sudo /usr/sbin/alternatives --config libjavaplugin.so.x86_64

# if /usr/sbin/alternatives shows a wrong item remove it
sudo /usr/sbin/alternatives --remove libjavaplugin.so.x86_64 /usr/java/jre1.7.0_40/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so

# install the newest one
sudo /usr/sbin/alternatives --install /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so libjavaplugin.so.x86_64 /usr/java/jre1.7.0_45/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so 1

Note: Remember, you've got to check alternatives --config java and alternatives --config libjavaplugin.so.x86_64 everytime you update java-1.7.0-openjdk
and switch it back to java (oracle).
