Cant install java SDK

I'm trying to install the java sdk and netbeans bundle package from java.sun.com, but when i've downloaded the file, I cant install it.

i set the file executable, then do ./filename.bin
and after it's been extracted, instead of the installer window, i get this console output:
Code:
........The installer is unable to run in graphical mode. Try running the installer with the -console
or -silent flag.
running with the -console flag doesn't work either...it just says it's not supported.
I've searched around, and sun says to set the display variable to :0.0, which i've tried. but still no joy. i've also unset the variable, but again, no luck. i've tried as user, and as root.

any ideas? i need netbeans and jdk 1.5 for uni work, so i need to get this working asap.

thanks,
paul. :

Silly question... Did you try it from a GUI (GNOME or KDE), or are you trying this just in a console (text) screen? Have you tried it in a terminal (gui commend) window?
