Wake On Lan.

I have two Linux boxes. One is my file server and the other is a backup for the file server. The file server is running all the time.

What I would like to do, is get the server to wake up the other machine and copy some files accross the network and then shut the machine down again.

I would like to know if this is possible, maybe using a cron job? And also, how do I use the wake on LAN feature under FC3?

I believe the motherboard in the machine I wish to wake up is equipt with the Wake On LAN feature. It is a Gigabyte K8VM800M VIA K8M800 chipset Motherboard (socket 754).

What you need is the program
ether-wake
I'm not sure if this comes with Fedora, but you can google for ether-wake.c and compile it.
You might also need to change things in your bios (of the computer you want to power up).
Not all nic cards have wake on lan capabilities.
Sometimes it may be necessare to turn on the wol feature of a card:
ethtool -s eth0 wol d
usually works.

It's in the net-tools package.

$ rpm -qf /sbin/ether-wake
