grub splash screen changeable?

i get a black and white text box of abt 10"wide and 3" height with box curser white sticking to right side of screen.actually we cant make out which boot is being selected.the select is not highlighted by anyway.
how can i intruduce some background in the grub loader screen.
the splash .tz in the bootloader folder does not extract gives a command line output.and says error extracting .some advice and alternatives please
or is it some monitor setup problem?

You can open that splash file in GIMP and change it to whatever.
