clone hdd with dd

how long does a cloneing with the command "dd" should take?

i`m trying to clone a 80gb hdd on a nother. one conected to the primary master sata the other one conected on the primary slave sata. i gues the computer is allready working 18 houres. do i can calculate the time for cloning? how can i recognize when the computer finish his work? or should i abort and try a disk clone with g4l or mondo?

For cloning purposes, I've always worked with partimage.
You have to boot from Knoppix or SystemRescueCD (the first has better hardware support), select the partition you want to clone and create an image of it somwhere you have enough space for it (e.g, en external hd). Do the same for each partition. Then create the partiton you need an the new drive (the same size as the old ones) and restore the images on them.
A 20 Gb partition with ~7 Gb of used space take 20 minuts to clone and 5 for restoring.


EDIT: I didn't notice you have sata hd; only knoppix will work for them
