FC4 system very slow

Hi

I just installed FC4 on my new Webserver, it has Intel P4 3.0 Ghz with hyper threading and 1 GB of RAM. But it is running very slow, in fact a lot slower than my other webserver which does not have as fast processor as this one. I am using kernel 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4smp. When I boot up the computer "Starting udev:" takes about 30-60 seconds and initializing hardware takes a lot of time also, at least a lot longer than with my other machine. I have tried using yum to update the machine (including the kernel), but it is still so slow. Does anybody know what can be the problem?

Type dmesg
maybe there's HDD errors
Also, make sure DMA is enabled on your HD's and that there are no errors on them. Bad blocks on a HD slows it down like crazy, I once had this problem.
Also, the new kernel is
2.6.15-1.1830_FC4smp. Run a full update first:

yum update -y

The dmesg output is in the attached file, I am not sure what I am looking for in that output.

I will also try updating the kernel.

Hmm.... You HDD's seem fine, (S)ATA...
Try the kernel -- that's where I think the problem lays.

OK!!!
well running 1 gig memory on some mother boards is quite an experience.
I finally got my P4 to boot a LOT quicker with using mem=1000M at the end of the second line in the grub.conf for the kernel you usually boot into.
It was the same old story--slow booting time--measured in 10's of minutes!
But since I really wanted to use at least most of the gig of ram, I used the mem=512M to test the memory caching/limit "fix" out.
And then used mem=999M and that worked, and then tried mem=1024M which did not work, BUT using mem=1000M does work!!!!
and using the free command gives me 1011428 total now and it flies!!
As usual your milage may vary--YMMV..
Hummmm--now I wonder if using the hugemem kernel/module would help???
At least I have 98% of the installed memory working now.
