What did I just install?

Hello All,

I'm back again. As I said in the thread I just marked solved, I got fedora 16 installed. The only thing is, I am not sure what I installed.

Started booting uefi Fedora 16 AMD64 DVD. Good. Added the "nomodeset" to the kernal boot line to prevent graphical errors, cool that worked. Fedora dropped to text base install (I think). Set time, set keyboard, default language, root password. Formatted SSD, installed system, installed a total of 196 packages. Reboot. Fedora installed in UEFI mode correctly, still doing the "nomodeset" thing (haven't tested not doing it yet, will soon), boot into fedora, terminal only. Can log into root. That is all I got so far.

I am not sure where I am or what is installed. How do I start network and x-server? Want to install KDE.

Can anyone point me to a instruction manual or tell me what happened? I am not even sure it installed correctly.

Re: What did I just install?

To me, what you described is the "Minimal" installation. The text mode installation defaults to the Minimal installation. If that is what happened, then there is no X, no KDE. But you can install those things if you want to proceed from this point. I like to install Fedora this way on purpose to reduce bloat from things I never use. I doubt that is a very popular idea.

If you are not interested in building up a system from Minimal, then maybe you should try to discover why the text mode installation occurred. It can be chosen, of course. But you would have remembered doing that. Or, it can be forced upon you. That often occurs because of some hardware deficiency in the minimal requirements. Often it's RAM.

Re: What did I just install?

Well, it isn't RAM, that is for sure. I have 16 gigs. No, I am pretty sure it dropped to min install for the same reason I have to do nomodeset at the kernal boot line. For whatever reason, the linux kernal (ubuntu and fedora at least) both have graphical errors when I try to boot. I assume it is to do with my Asus EAH6850 ATI Radeon GPU.

I am more than happy to proceed manually installing and setting up Fedora, just looking for good instructions on how to proceed. I know I need to set up the network and get an x-server (KDE for me). I know I will need to either find a method to have these become default boot, or figure out how to set up the daemons to do that myself, just don't know how...yet.
