gdm goes blank: any idea?

hi. this is a follow up to the amd 7650m problem with f17
the card works with 32bit kernel but not with the pae or the 64bit one
the point is that after the boot process I get stuck with the cursor working but gdm not showing up. I have to press the standby button , put it in stand by , wake it and the magically I get gdm
this works with the 32bit kernel
with pae or 64 bit the wake up is a blank screen....
any idea of the reason or the workaround (apart the fact to use the 32bit kernel even if I have a 8giga ram)?
