Splash screen hangs

My machine went into sleep mode and I wasn't able to log in. I rebooted and now my machine seems to hang at the splash screen. I hit <esc> and was able to log into a virtual terminal. Checked the X logs, dmesg, and messages, and the only thing "unusual looking" is the following:

init: prefdm main process (###) terminated with status 1
init: prefdm main process respawning too fast, respawning

Any help would be much appreciated.
