password is not accepted

I entered the root password for upgrading my system and it says password is incorrect , while the password works fine for installing packages please help me on this.

where does it say password is incorrect? what app are you running?

can you login as root using 'su -' ?

if not, boot to runlevel 1 by adding 1 to kernel boot line at grub boot screen and change password with 'passwd' command
