Fedora 14 - Sony Vaio SZ webcam

Hi there

I have a (6-7 year old) Sony Vaio SZ which I run Fedora 14 on. Fedora 14 cannot autodetect the webcam on the laptop. I've looked through threads on the web and found that lsusb identifies the webcam as:

Bus 001 Device 004: ID 05ca:1835 Ricoh Co., Ltd Visual Communication Camera VGP-VCC5 [R5U870]

I followed the thread and downloaded kernel module source for the camera from http://www.palmix.org/r5u870-en.html and attempted to build it.

But when I try to build it I get the following error message:

make -C /lib/modules/ M=/home/chris/r5u/r5u870-0.10.0-tz17 V=0 modules
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/kernels/'
  CC [M]  /home/chris/r5u/r5u870-0.10.0-tz17/r5u870_md.o
In file included from /home/chris/r5u/r5u870-0.10.0-tz17/r5u870_md.c:55:0:
/home/chris/r5u/r5u870-0.10.0-tz17/usbcam.h:36:29: fatal error: media/video-buf.h: No such file or directory
compilation terminated.
When I look I cannot find video-buf.h anywhere in the linux kernel source tree?
Can anyone help me with what I am missing here please

That palmix.org site's been dead since 2009, even your old Fedora 14 has a newer kernel than the palmix code will support. Try using this one:

Looking in the Changelog file I see this hopeful bit of information at the top (they state it's been ported up to
and beyond kernel 2.6.30, .35, and then 3.x
2012-05-01 <333pei@gmail.com>
Ported r5u870 to kernel-3.2

2011-10-01 <333pei@gmail.com>
Ported r5u870 to kernel <= 3.0

2010-10-01 <333pei@gmail.com>
Ported r5u870 to kernel-2.6.35

2008-06-15 Onur Küçük <onur@pardus.org.tr>
Ported r5u870 to kernel-2.6.30.
UPDATE == I was able to compile the google driver on Fedora 16 with kernel 3.3.5-2 with just two minor edits:

1) r5u870.c -- added #include <linux/slab.h>

2) usbcam/usbcam_fops.c -- commented out

.compat_ioctl = v4l_compat_ioctl32,

from inside of structure "v4l2_file_operations"

Re: Fedora 14 - Sony Vaio SZ webcam

Thanks very much for your reply Marko - sorry for delay in this response too.

Indeed you are correct. I've given up with Fedora 14 and taken the plunge, installed Fedora 17 on the laptop, and with your changes, the webcam is now working - quality seems pretty poor mind - but it is working.

Thanks very much for directing me to the newer codebase.
