GNOME 3.4 how to make an app launcher?

This GNOME 3.4 is starting to get on my nerves.

How on earth do you create something as basic and necessary as an application launcher?

I don't want to muck with stuff under /usr.

I want the app launcher to be just for my own desktop.

I tried creating a .desktop file under ~/.local/share/applications - Nope.

I tried creating a .desktop file under ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/applications - Nope.

And yes, I reloaded the shell with Alt-F2 -> r.

UPDATE: I tried this again and was able to create ~/.local/share/applications/myapp.desktop file that worked.

This would be way too hard for average user to comprehend.

Need much simpler mechanism for users to add a simple application launcher.
