Keyboard problem - very strange

Can anybody help me with this strange problem? My keyboard used to work fine. When I press the letter 'a' on my keyboard in a 'terminal' window I get the chars 'a0128' displayed instead of just 'a'. When I try in Firefox and I have more than one tab open, the letter 'a' will do some freaky things like scroll through the tabs.

If I load up gedit, or any other gnome app, the 'a' key is fine. Only seems to happen in a terminal window or firefox. Now here is the even stranger part. If I swap the keyboard everything is fine.

If I log in as a different user using the keyboard I'm having problems with. The letter 'a' is messed up in terminal again producing a0128 when I press it, BUT..it works in firefox this time.

I hope I explained that throughly. What a strange problem.

sounds like a character coding problem to me (is that the right English expression, I mean that UTF or ISO-88etc stuff)
what do you mean with "swap the keyboard"? using another one? in that case the first one could be half broken perhaps?
As you say - strange problem...
