Split Display on FC6 Inspiron 4000

I just wiped out FC5 on my Inspiron 4000 and installed FC6. There are obvious issues with the display, which I am guessing is due to the video drivers. The video card is an ATI Rage Mobility M3 AGP 2X.

By modifying xorg.conf or through the GUI, I can get 1024x768 to run, but I only see the left side of the screen clearly, there are fuzzy lines down the middle and then the right side repeats.

My goal is to run the native resolution of 1400x1050. I had this same issue when I installed FC5, and there is even a very similar post from me back then... To fix it then, I just went to the system>display gui and changed the display to generic LCD and 1400x1050. This doesn't work with FC6. I am able to change resolutions, just not to the one that I want.

In xorg.conf, the "Device" driver is "r128". Screen has Depth of 24, lots of resolutions listed in Modes, including 1400x1050. One interesting thing is that under Monitor, the ModelName is LCD Panel 1024x768.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    David.

I have to say that I am very frustrated. After dealing with the Anaconda bug, removing the i586 kernel and installing the i686 kernel, I tried the Livna fglrx drivers, but that didn't help either. I am disappointed that what worked fine in FC3 doesn't work in FC6.

Anyone else out there trying to get FC6 working on an older Inspiron or a machine with the ATI Rage Mobility?

I want to get FC6 working, but if I can't get my native video resolution, I will probably try Ubuntu to see how it handles my video card.

I just installed FC6 on an Inspiron 4000. I ran Debian Etch for a few weeks, but the pointer kept going crazy at random times for no apparent reason.

To get rid of the split screen, set your default depth to 16 in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I'm running nicely at 1280x1024.
